Evensong is said or sung in cathedrals, chapels and churches around the Anglican Communion every evening throughout the year. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489–1556) created the service for the Book of Common Prayer by fusing together the monastic evening offices of Vespers and Compline. Word and music join together: each enriching the other so that our senses and intellects, our hearts and minds, work together to draw us closer to God and give us a glimpse of God’s glory. The music of Evensong, like the architecture of the Cathedral, is art that is finely-wrought. The choir offers its music on behalf of the rest of the community. As we allow it to draw us into its life, we awaken to a new discovery of God’s love.
