SUMMARY:2024 Distinguished Artist Master Class: Dan Tepfer\, Piano
DESCRIPTION:2024 DISTINGUISHED ARTIST WEEKEND\npresenting a master class with\nDAN TEPFER\, piano\nfeaturing prominent professional jazz and classical pianists\n\nSaturday\, February 10\, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon\nNave of St. Matthew’s Cathedral\nfree parking and admission \nEvent flyer here. \nAbout the Artist:\n \nOne of his generation’s extraordinary talents\, Dan Tepfer has earned an international reputation as a pianist-composer of wide-ranging ambition\, individuality\, and drive—one “who refuses to set himself limits” (France’s Télérama). The New York City-based Tepfer\, born in 1982 in Paris to American parents\, has recorded and performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music\, from Lee Konitz to Renée Fleming\, and released ten albums of his own in solo\, duo and trio formats. \nTepfer earned global acclaim for his 2011 release Goldberg Variations / Variations\, a disc that sees him performing J.S. Bach’s masterpiece as well as improvising upon it—to “elegant\, thoughtful and thrilling” effect (New York magazine). Tepfer’s newest video album\, Natural Machines\, stands as one of his most ingeniously forward-minded yet\, finding him exploring in real time the intersection between science and art\, coding and improvisation\, digital algorithms and the rhythms of the heart. The New York Times has called him “a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown.” \nDuring the COVID pandemic\, his belief that music brings people together in times of crisis led him to dive headlong into live-streaming\, performing close to two hundred online concerts from his home for a devoted community of listeners. As part of this effort\, he pioneered ultra-low-latency audio technology enabling him to perform live through the internet with musicians in separate locations\, culminating in the development of his own app\, FarPlay. \nTepfer has composed for various ensembles beyond jazz. His piano quintet Solar Spiral was premiered in 2016 at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival\, with Tepfer performing alongside the Avalon String Quartet. Tepfer has received commissions from the Prague Castle Guard Orchestra for two works: the suite Algorithmic Transform (2015) and a concerto for symphonic wind band and improvising piano\, The View from Orohena (2010). In the summer of 2019\, Tepfer unveiled his jazz-trio arrangement of Stravinsky’s Baroque-channeling Pulcinella. \nTepfer’s honors include first prizes at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition\, the 2006 East Coast Jazz Festival Competition\, and the 2007 American Pianists Association Jazz Piano Competition\, as well as fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2014)\, the MacDowell Colony (2016)\, and the Fondation BNP-Paribas (2018). \nVisit Dan Tepfer online here.

SUMMARY:Byzantine Icon Painting Workshop with Theodoros Papadopoulos CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Renowned Greek iconographer Theodoros Papadopoulos leads summer painting workshops across Europe and the U.S. He is offering a six-day workshop in the Greek Byzantine style at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. The workshop will be held Monday-Saturday\, June 15-20 from 9:00 to 5:00 each day. The cost for the course is $685. Most of the materials are included. You do not have to be a highly-skilled artist to enroll\, only someone seeking to deepen their spirituality. Because of the intense nature of instruction\, only twelve students are allowed. \nPlease contact Valerie Kaiser at valvkaiser@gmail.com for more detailed information. \nFrom the Artist: \nThe obligations and responsibilities of an iconographer who takes over the illustration of a holy church are enormous. I do not think there is a greater challenge for such an artist than taking on such a project. It is very easy to fill the walls with icons. But for me merely filling space is not significant. The most important part is the study of the church’s architecture\, which will lead to a building taking on the appearance of one whole area which appears united by its surroundings. I strive to understand the interior of the church as a single composition\, where all the pieces must be connected and in full color and architectural harmony.  The fragmentation of the surface with multiple partitions into small and disconnected painting issues may cause disharmony and tension to the viewer-believer. The artist’s work should help to achieve harmony\, humility\, inner peace and tranquility in order to prepare believers for the sacrament of the Eucharist. \nThe iconographer’s work resembles that of a priest. As St. Theodosius the Hermit says\, “One composes the blood of Christ\, and the other presents it”. Iconography is a religious act. The artist’s mission is to translate the images he presents into spirit in order to touch the soul of the believer with his work. Being aware of the seriousness and the importance of such a project\, and being a strict judge of my own work\, I have set as my main objective to present a work which fulfills its purpose and remains faithful to the spirit and doctrine of the Orthodox Church. But iconography should not be characterized by static\, photocopying and sterile imitation of past images. The artist must widen\, enrich and constantly renew his work. – Theodoros Papadopoulos \nEvent flyer here.

SUMMARY:Cathedral Arts Book Review Club presents A Kingdom of Their Own: The Story of the Palmers of Glen Eyrie
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist\, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday\, March 10 at 10:30 am\, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Nancy Lippincott Ashley from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association\, in a lively discussion of A Kingdom of Their Own: The Story of the Palmers of Glen Eyrie by Stephen J. May. \nThese second Tuesday meetings in the Justus Sundermann Gallery include a 10:30 coffee\, 10:45 presentation and an optional Club Members luncheon at 11:35 ($20.00 for non-members). Please contact Andrea Foster at 214.341.3432 by Thursday\, March 5 to make a lunch reservation. \nAbout the book:\nA vividly written biography of one of Colorado’s first families. General Palmer\, founder of Colorado Springs and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad\, is well known to Coloradans. But lesser known and just as compelling in many ways\, are his wife Queen and their daughters\, who inhabited one of the great houses in the West\, Glen Eyrie. Almost like a fairy tale in its conception\, their relationship was a fascinating blend of frontier challenges and gracious living amid the Wild West of the 1870s and ’80s. It’s the Downton Abbey of the West\, with a strong central character (General Palmer) surrounded by a loyal but headstrong wife and growing daughters. \nEvent flyer here.

SUMMARY:Cathedral Arts Book Review Club presents One Summer: America\, 1927
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist\, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday\, February 11 at 10:30 am\, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Colleen Boudreaux from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association\, in a lively discussion of Bill Bryson’s One Summer: America\, 1927. \nAbout the book:\nOn May 21\, 1927\, when Charles Lindbergh set off to be the first man to cross the Atlantic alone in an airplane\, he profoundly changed the culture and commerce of America and its image abroad. Add to that Babe Ruth’s efforts to break the home-run record he set\, Henry Ford’s retooling of the Model T into the Model A\, the execution of accused anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti\, and Al Jolson appearing in the first talkie\, and 1927 became the pivot point when the U.S. began to dominate the world in virtually everything—military\, culture\, commerce\, and technology. Bryson’s inimitable wit and exuberance are on full display in this wide-ranging look at the major events in an exciting summer in America. Bryson makes fascinating interconnections: a quirky Chicago judge and Prohibition defender leaves the bench to become baseball commissioner following the White Sox scandal\, likely leaving Chicago open for gangster Al Capone; the thrill-hungry tabloids and a growing cult of celebrity watchers dog Lindbergh’s every move and chronicle Ruth’s every peccadillo. Among the other events in a frenzied summer: record flooding of the Mississippi River and the ominous beginnings of the Great Depression. Bryson offers delicious detail and breathtaking suspense about events whose outcomes are already known. A glorious look at one summer in America. Bill Bryson is the author of such best-selling books as A Walk in the Woods (1998) and A Short History of Nearly Everything (2008). — from a review by Vanessa Bush \nThese second Tuesday meetings in the Justus Sundermann Gallery include a 10:30 coffee\, 10:45 presentation and an optional Club Members luncheon at 11:35 ($20.00 for non-members). Please contact Andrea Foster at 214.341.3432 by Thursday\, February 6 to make a lunch reservation. \nEvent flyer here.

SUMMARY:Cathedral Arts Book Review Club: The Women Who Wrote the War
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist\, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday\, January 14 at 10:30 am\, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Mary Booty from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association\, in a lively discussion of The Women Who Wrote the War: The Compelling Story of the Path-breaking Women War Correspondents of World War II by Nancy Caldwell Sorel. \nHere’s how a hundred brave American women left their families and entered the combat-zone to chronicle what they saw. Nancy Sorel’s portrait pays homage to these unsung heroes. They came from Boston\, New York\, Milwaukee\, and St. Louis; from Yakima\, Washington; Austin\, Texas; and Sioux City\, Iowa; from San Francisco and all points east. They left comfortable homes and safe surroundings for combat-zone duty. As women war correspondents\, they brought to the battlefields of World War II a fresh optic\, and reported back home what they witnessed with a new sensibility. Their experience was at once wide-ranging and intimate\, devastating at one moment\, heartwarming the next. In their ranks we encounter world-famous photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White\, the only Western photographer to cover the Nazi invasion of the USSR; Martha Gellhorn\, writer and wife of Ernest Hemingway\, who presciently reported on the menace of fascism; The New Yorker’s Janet Flanner\, recording the bleak realities of life in post-liberation France; and Marguerite Higgins\, who dared enter the concentration camp at Dachau just ahead of the American army. In her graphic\, seamless narrative\, Nancy Sorel weaves together the lives and times of these gutsy\, incomparable women\, assuring them their rightful place in this century’s history. \nThese second Tuesday meetings in the Justus Sundermann Gallery include a 10:30 coffee\, 10:45 presentation and an optional Club Members luncheon at 11:35 ($20.00 for non-members). Please contact Andrea Foster at 214.341.3432 by Thursday\, January 9 to make a lunch reservation. \nEvent flyer here.

SUMMARY:Cathedral Arts Book Review
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist\, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday\, November 12 at 10:30 am\, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Susan Boone from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association\, in a lively discussion of The Other Alcott\, a novel by Elise Hooper. \nStylish\, outgoing\, creative May Alcott grows up longing to experience the wide world beyond Concord\, Massachusetts. While her sister Louisa crafts stories\, May is a talented and dedicated artist\, one who takes art lessons in Boston\, turns down a marriage proposal from a well-off suitor\, and faces scorn for entering what is very much a man’s profession. Life for the Alcott family has never been easy. When\nLouisa’s novel\, Little Women\, is published its success eases the financial burdens the family has been facing for so many years. Everyone agrees the novel is charming\, but May is struck to the core by her\nsister’s portrayal of her as the selfish\, spoiled Amy March and left wondering if this is what her sister thinks of her. May embarks on a quest to discover her identity\, as an artist and a woman. From Boston to Rome\, London\, and Paris\, this brave and determined soul forges an amazing life of her own\, making her so much more than merely “The Other Alcott”. \nThese second Tuesday meetings in the Justus Sundermann Gallery include a 10:30 coffee\, 10:45 presentation and an optional Club Members luncheon at 11:35 ($20.00 for non-members).
