SUMMARY:PIANO MASTERS AND MASTERWORKS: ELDRED MARSHALL
DESCRIPTION:presenting\nELDRED MARSHALL\, piano\nin recital\nMASTERWORKS BY FAURÉ\, DEBUSSY\, RAVEL AND MESSIAEN\nSUNDAY\, MARCH 8 at 3:00 PM\nGREAT HALL\nFREE COVERED PARKING AND ADMISSION\nRECITAL PROGRAM AND NOTES\nEVENT FLYER\n\n\n\nThe Press Enterprise (Riverside\, CA) hailed his “dazzling technique” and his “clean\, tidy approach.” Music critic Laurence Vittes described him as an “illumination in music\,” and said of his all-Beethoven recital: “Marshall presented a recital so full of musical thrills and beauties\, and so in identification with the composer’s own persona\, that\, for a few hours\, it was as if he were communing across the centuries to conjure up a rare and magical musical spectrum.” The Telegraf Online Constanta (Romania) reported that Marshall “captivated the audience” in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20\, which he conducted from the piano. \nEldred Marshall began studying the piano at age six and played in public by age seven. His prodigious and inquisitive mind allowed him to master large swaths of the piano repertoire quickly as well as consistently win top prizes at the competitions he entered as a child. By 16\, he debuted with orchestra\, playing Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Victor Valley Symphony Orchestra. Before entering into Yale University\, where he graduated with honors with a B.A. in Political Science\, he had already performed all over the United States. \nThe critically-acclaimed pianist has performed in Spain\, Italy\, the Republic of San Marino\, Belgium\, Germany\, Romania\, Bulgaria\, the Ukraine\, the People’s Republic of China\, and Canada. He has performed the entire cycle of 32 Piano Sonatas of Beethoven in public\, from memory\, as a concentrated series\, twice. Other notable tour projects include all-Bach piano recital programs including the Goldberg Variations\, the Well-Tempered Clavier\, Book 1\, and Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. Recently\, he was a featured artist of the 2024 Basically Beethoven Festival in Dallas\, and the guest artist of the 2024 Lied Center Piano Academy in Lincoln\, Nebraska. As an orchestral conductor\, Marshall has led the Ukrainian State Academic Orchestra (Kiev\, Ukraine)\, the Kharkiv Youth Symphony (Kharkiv\, Ukraine)\, the Pleven Philharmonic Orchestra (Pleven\, Bulgaria)\, the Vidin Philharmonic Orchestra (Vidin\, Bulgaria)\, the Filharmonica Oltenia di Craiova (Craiova\, Romania)\, and the Constanta “Black Sea” Philharmonic Orchestra (Constanta\, Romania). Additionally\, he has led several opera productions\, including Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne\, Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte\, as well as Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande. Marshall earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance degree from the University of North Texas in 2018.  His doctoral dissertation was on the art of conducting piano concerti from the piano – performance practice\, discipline and whether or not it is “real conducting.” He additionally earned three Master of Music degrees from Southern Methodist University: piano (2011)\, organ (2012) and orchestral conducting (2013). Marshall has taught and lectured at Grambling State University\, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln\, Texas A&M Commerce\, UNT\, SMU\, and North Texas Central College. \nMarshall presently serves as the Artistic Director/Conductor of the Mansfield Philharmonic Orchestra. He also serves as Associate Director of Music at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Rockwall\, Texas. He is the founding Artistic Director/Conductor of the Lucas Chorale\, and the Organist/Music Director of Grace Fellowship Seventh-day Adventist Church in Lucas\, Texas.

SUMMARY:PLACES OF PRAYER II: New Photographs from Eight Dallas Architects
DESCRIPTION:New Photographs by Eight Prominent Dallas Area Architects\nCarolyn Brown and Evelyn Luciani\, Curators\n*Justus Sundermann Gallery\nSeptember 5 through November 2025\n\nDallas developed as diverse people came to the city with ambitions and aspirations. They also brought their religious convictions. And they expressed all of it in architecture and art. Many religious traditions are observed by believers at their homes. Jews share Passover meals\, Muslims break the Ramadan fast\, and Hindus have shrines in homes where they live. Jews\, Hindus\, Muslims\, Buddhists\, Christians and others also practice their spirituality in places of prayer they create for their constituents and for the communities that they serve. They build structures that respect the texts they treasure and honor the history though which they have traveled. Some of their buildings dominate city blocks. Others are intimate and elegantly simple.  – William B. Lawrence\, Perkins School of Theology\, SMU \nFeaturing photographs by:\nDaisy Avalos\nJustin Curtsinger\nFrank Richards\nBob Sherman\nGary Skotnicki\nCharles Davis Smith\nNelson Spencer\nDiane Van Buren \n*Please note: the Justus Sundermann Gallery is located in a secured area of St. Matthew’s Cathedral. She is University Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita at Southern Methodist University. Proficient in music and languages as well as art history\, Comini brought an interdisciplinary approach to her study of the arts in Austria and Germany at the turn of the 20th century\, an approach particularly suited to the integrated art forms of fin-de-siècle Vienna. \nEarly and personal life\nAlessandra Comini was born the daughter of Megan Laird and Raiberto Comini in Winona\, Minnesota. Her earliest years were spent in Barcelona\, Milan\, and Dallas. Comini received her B.A. from Barnard College (1956)\, her M.A\, from the University of California\, Berkeley (1964)\, and her Ph.D. from Columbia University (1969). Her dissertation on the topic of Egon Schiele’s portraiture was written under Theodore Reff. \nIn 1974\, she began her decades of collaboration with art historian Eleanor Tufts at Southern Methodist University. \nCareer\nWhile teaching at Columbia between 1965 and 1974\, Comini became one of the founders of the Women’s Caucus for Art in 1972. She taught at Southern Methodist University from 1974 until 2005. And she guest taught at the University of California\, Berkeley (1967) and Yale University (1973). Voted outstanding professor sixteen times by her students\, Comini served as the Alfred Hodder Resident Humanist at Princeton University (1972–1973) and was named Distinguished Visiting Lecturer at Oxford University’s European Humanities Research Centre (1996). \nCelebrated for her witty\, erudite\, and compelling public lectures\, Comini has been in demand as a guest speaker nationally and internationally. As an interdisciplinary speaker\, Comini lectured repeatedly at the Leipzig Gewandhaus symposia\, The Santa Fe Opera\, and for the Indianapolis and Dallas Symphony Orchestras. \nIn 1990 Comini was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in recognition of her contributions to Germanic culture. \nIn 2014 Comini turned to fiction writing and has published nine art history murder mystery novels since in the Megan Crespi Series. \nThe Neue Galerie Museum for German and Austrian Art\, New York\, commissioned Comini to curate its blockbuster exhibition Egon Schiele’s Portraits (2014–15). \nHonors and Awards\nComini’s book Egon Schiele’s Portraits (1974) was nominated for a National Book Award (1975) and received the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Book Award (1976). Comini’s book The Changing Image of Beethoven: A Study in Mythmaking (1987) was a pioneer application of reception history to imagery. \n\n1995 – Women’s Caucus for Art\, Lifetime Achievement Award\n1996 – United Methodist Church Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award\n2002 – Texas Hall of Fame nomination\n2005 – Comini Lecture Series established\, Southern Methodist University\n2010 – Medal of Honor\, Veteran Feminists of America\n2011 – Distinguished Alumna Award\, Barnard College\n2012 – International Symposium\, Neulengbach\, Austria\, “Alessandra Comini und Neulengbach”\n2018 – Golden Honor of Merit for Services to the State of Lower Austria\n2019 – Alessandra Comini International Fellowship for Study Abroad\, founded by Meadows School of the Arts\, Southern Methodist University

SUMMARY:Places of Prayer: A New Photographic Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Works by Eight Prominent Dallas Area Photographers\nCarolyn Brown\, Curator\nJustus Sundermann Gallery\nMarch 3 through April 2024\nExhibit Opening and Artist Reception\nRemarks by Anthony Elia\,\nDirector of the Bridwell Library\, SMU\nSunday\, March 3 at 3:00 pm \nDallas developed as diverse people came to the city with ambitions and aspirations. SUMMARY:2024 Distinguished Artist Master Class: Dan Tepfer\, Piano
DESCRIPTION:2024 DISTINGUISHED ARTIST WEEKEND\npresenting a master class with\nDAN TEPFER\, piano\nfeaturing prominent professional jazz and classical pianists\n\nSaturday\, February 10\, 10:00 am – 12:00 noon\nNave of St. Matthew’s Cathedral\nfree parking and admission \nEvent flyer here. \nAbout the Artist:\n \nOne of his generation’s extraordinary talents\, Dan Tepfer has earned an international reputation as a pianist-composer of wide-ranging ambition\, individuality\, and drive—one “who refuses to set himself limits” (France’s Télérama). The New York City-based Tepfer\, born in 1982 in Paris to American parents\, has recorded and performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music\, from Lee Konitz to Renée Fleming\, and released ten albums of his own in solo\, duo and trio formats. \nTepfer earned global acclaim for his 2011 release Goldberg Variations / Variations\, a disc that sees him performing J.S. Bach’s masterpiece as well as improvising upon it—to “elegant\, thoughtful and thrilling” effect (New York magazine). Tepfer’s newest video album\, Natural Machines\, stands as one of his most ingeniously forward-minded yet\, finding him exploring in real time the intersection between science and art\, coding and improvisation\, digital algorithms and the rhythms of the heart. The New York Times has called him “a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown.” \nDuring the COVID pandemic\, his belief that music brings people together in times of crisis led him to dive headlong into live-streaming\, performing close to two hundred online concerts from his home for a devoted community of listeners. As part of this effort\, he pioneered ultra-low-latency audio technology enabling him to perform live through the internet with musicians in separate locations\, culminating in the development of his own app\, FarPlay. \nTepfer has composed for various ensembles beyond jazz. His piano quintet Solar Spiral was premiered in 2016 at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival\, with Tepfer performing alongside the Avalon String Quartet. Tepfer has received commissions from the Prague Castle Guard Orchestra for two works: the suite Algorithmic Transform (2015) and a concerto for symphonic wind band and improvising piano\, The View from Orohena (2010). In the summer of 2019\, Tepfer unveiled his jazz-trio arrangement of Stravinsky’s Baroque-channeling Pulcinella. \nTepfer’s honors include first prizes at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition\, the 2006 East Coast Jazz Festival Competition\, and the 2007 American Pianists Association Jazz Piano Competition\, as well as fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2014)\, the MacDowell Colony (2016)\, and the Fondation BNP-Paribas (2018). \nVisit Dan Tepfer online here.
