SUMMARY:2018-19 Distinguished Artist Recital: Émile Naoumoff
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 8 at 7:30 pm\nGreat Hall\nFree parking and admission \nReception with the artist follows immediately \nProgram:\nJ.S. Bach: Passacaglia in C minor\, BWV 582\nGabriel Fauré:  Nocturnes Nos. 6\, 7 and 13\nMaurice Ravel:  Valses nobles et sentimentales\nLili Boulanger:  Thème et variations\nNadia Boulanger: Vers la vie nouvelle\nÉmile Naoumoff: Las Brisas \nOn Saturday\, February 9 at 9:30 am\, Mr. Naoumoff will return to St. Matthew’s to conduct a master class with select young pianists and a chamber music ensemble from Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts. Admission is free to the public. Donations are welcomed. \nAbout the Artist:\nÉmile Naoumoff has been likened to both Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein as a pianist\, displaying — as one critic remarked — the fire of the former and the poetry of the latter. Émile revealed himself as a musical prodigy at age five\, taking up the piano and adding composition to his studies a year later. At the age of seven\, after a fateful meeting in Paris\, he became the last disciple of the legendary Nadia Boulanger\, who referred to him as “The gift of my old age.” He studied with her until her death in late 1979. During this auspicious apprenticeship\, Mlle. Boulanger gave him the opportunity to work with Clifford Curzon\, Igor Markevitch\, Robert and Gaby Casadesus\, Nikita Magaloff\, Jean Francaix\, Leonard Bernstein\, Soulima Stravinsky\, Aram Khachaturian and Yehudi Menuhin. Lord Menuhin conducted the premiere of Émile’s first piano concerto\, with the composer as a soloist\, when he was ten years old. At the same time\, he pursued music courses at the Paris Conservatory with Lelia Gousseau\, Pierre Sancan and Genevieve Joy-Dutilleux\, and studied conducting at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Pierre Dervaux. \nÉmile regularly appears with the world’s premier orchestras: the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, the Berlin Symphony\, the Vienna Symphony\, the San Francisco Symphony\, National Symphony in Washington\, Moscow Symphony\, NHK Symphony\, the Residentie Orkest of the Hague\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France\, Camerata Bern\, and has worked closely with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein\, Igor Markevitch\, Leonard Slatkin\, Mstislav Rostropovich and Eliahu Inbal. His musical collaborations include Jean-Pierre Rampal\, Gerard Souzay\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Gary Hoffman\, Olivier Charlier\, Patrice Fontanarosa\, Regis Pasquier\, Philippe Graffin\, Philippe Bernold\, Gerard Caussé\, Jean Ferrandis\, Dominique de Williencourt and the Fine Arts Quartet. \nHighlights of his career include a performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl\, and his own piano concerto version of Moussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich. In recent years Émile has been invited to numerous music festivals\, including the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music’s Menuhin Seminars\, Santander Summer Masterclasses\, Verbier Academy Festival\, the Banff Center\, and residencies at Conservatory of Barcelona (ESMUC). In 1996\, he opened his own summer academy at the Château de Rangiport in Gargenville\, France\, in the spirit of Nadia Boulanger. Émile has been a professor at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music since 1998. He is an avid composer of French mélodies\, and is known for his mastery in transcribing music for the piano. Émile maintains a video journal of daily improvisations on his YouTube channel. \nRead more about the artist here.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: “Afghan Odyssey - 1967” – Photographs by Richard Boul
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nOpening January 3\n“Over fifty years have passed since I took these photographs in Afghanistan. These landscapes and portraits should be viewed simply for what they are\, from a traveler’s viewpoint without any depiction of politics or the presence of a foreign power which have been the lot of this small yet pivotal country since that time. This was a quiet interlude in Afghan history where one could travel freely and without fear in this ancient tribal land. The people here are proud and fiercely independent\, even xenophobic\, but at the same time welcoming beyond one’s expectations. Their history goes back to the end of the 4th millennium BC\, but more recently in 330 BC the area was colonized by Alexander the Great and the Greek language was introduced. By the 3rd century BC the area had already become the crossroads of Asia and to this day one sees the influence of Persian\, Indian and Greek ideas. Afghanistan was on the Silk Route\, stretching 700 miles from China to Greece\, and one sees the Greek influence\, (as shown in several photographs included in the exhibit) especially in the two standing Buddhas in Bamian\, which itself was on the Silk Route. Subsequently\, Bamian was totally destroyed and its entire population put to the sword by Genghis Khan in 1220 AD. So\, turbulence is no newcomer to Afghanistan but in spite of it all\, one is left with an overwhelming sense of history and culture.” – Richard Boul \nVisit Richard Boul online here.

SUMMARY:Closing Reception: “Sacred Space - Visual Voice” – Works by Annie Ehrenreich
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nThrough December 16\nAnnie Ehrenreich found herself fascinated by colorful Christian Medieval artwork\, causing her to experiment with the creation of updated devotional mosaics of faith. Utilizing paper tiles of Medieval and Renaissance works from the public domain\, her process has been self-taught. A growing number of secular art mosaics from the same periods has expanded her saturated art line. She finds “the physical action of hand-piecing these works to be spiritually centering and meditative.” This passion was sparked during an Art History of the Middle Ages course taken as a returning college student and was further inflamed while touring museums and cathedrals in Prague and Vienna. \n“As a kindergartener\, I crayoned all over my paper in different colors\, covered it all with solid black\, and then scraped it away to reveal multi-colored designs. As a teenager\, I obsessed about the collage posters on my wall being placed exactly level. As a returning adult college student\, I fell in love with Medieval Christian art when I took my first (and only) Art History course. The Holy Image collaborations were first and then came the Secular line. I love how the group massed together seems to highlight the individual artwork. I hope others will feel as I do and enjoy these art mosaics with a depth of appreciation for each individual work of art as well as for the impact of the whole.” – Annie Ehrenreich \nMore about the artist here.

SUMMARY:Lucy and Friends in Concert: An Evening of Love and Laughter
DESCRIPTION:LIEBESLIEDER WALTZES\, OP. 52 (JOHANNES BRAHMS)\nLIEBESLIEDER POLKAS (P.D.Q. BACH)\nFRIDAY\, SEPTEMBER 28\n7:30 PM\nGREAT HALL \nFREE ADMISSION\nPOST-CONCERT RECEPTION \nLUCY CREECH\, SOPRANO\nNATALIE ARDUINO\, ALTO\nROBERT WILSON\, TENOR\nDAVID GROGAN\, BASS \nH. MICHIE AKIN & BRIAN BENTLEY\, PIANO FOUR HANDS \nAbout the music (adapted from Wikipedia articles): \nJohannes Brahms’ Liebeslieder Waltzes\, Op. 52 is a collection of love songs in Ländler style for voices and piano four hands. The lyrics for the Liebeslieder come from Georg Friedrich Daumer’s Polydora\, a collection of folk songs and love poems. While there is no record indicating the inspiration for the Waltzes\, there is speculation that Brahms’ motivation for the songs was his frustrated love for pianist Clara Schumann\, composer Robert Schumann’s wife. \nThe Liebeslieder Waltzes were completed in 1869 and were first performed January 5\, 1870. One aspect of the Liebeslieder Waltzes that possibly contributed to the work’s positive reception was that Brahms composed them with reference to Johann Strauss\, who was considered the “Waltz King.” With such another well-known composer attached to the work\, the audience would have enjoyed the tribute. To some\, Brahms revived chamber music. \nThe Liebeslieder Waltzes are written in a popular style\, but do not lose Brahms’ signature compositional complexity. Scored for piano four hands and voices ad libitum\, the piece can easily accommodate many different-sized ensembles. Although today they are part of the standard choral repertoire\, Brahms more likely intended them to be played in parlors or informal home gatherings rather than in concert halls. Immediately successful\, these waltzes were responsible for much of his personal wealth\, and solidified his reputation with the general music-buying public in Vienna and Europe. \n \nLiebeslieder Polkas for Mixed Chorus and Piano Five Hands\, S. 2/4\, is actually the music of American composer Peter Schickele (b. 1935)\, written under the comic pseudonym of P. D. Q. Bach. He describes this work as “the first opus of P.D.Q. Bach to be discovered in which he inflicted his music on the work of well-known poets\, or even known poets\, for that matter.” \nSchickele gives a humorous fictional biography of the composer\, according to which P. D. Q. Bach was born in Leipzig on April 1\, 1742\, the son of Johann Sebastian Bach and Anna Magdalena Bach; the twenty-first of Johann’s twenty children. He is also referred to as “the youngest and oddest of Johann Sebastian’s 20-odd children.” According to Schickele\, P. D. Q. “possessed the originality of Johann Christian\, the arrogance of Carl Philipp Emanuel\, and the obscurity of Johann Christoph Friedrich . . . His musical life has been divided into three creative periods: the Initial Plunge\, the Soused Period\, and Contrition. The middle period was by far the longest of the three\, and was characterized by a multiplicity of contrapuntal lines and a greater richness of harmony due to almost constant double vision. It was during this period that he emulated (i.e.\, stole from) the music of Haydn and Mozart\, but his pathetic attempts to be au courant were no more successful than his pathetic attempts to be passé had been during the Initial Plunge; having to cope with the problems that accompany immense popularity was something P.D.Q. Bach managed to avoid. It has been said that the only original places in his music are those places where he forgot what he was stealing.” \nSchickele’s works attributed to P. D. Q. Bach often incorporate comical rearrangements of well-known works of other composers. There is often a startling juxtaposition of styles within a single P. D. Q. Bach piece. The humor in P. D. Q. Bach music often derives from a violation of audience expectations\, such as repeating a tune more than the usual number of times\, resolving a musical chord later than usual (or not at all)\, unusual key changes\, excessive dissonance\, or sudden switches from high art to low art. \nThe titles in this collection also reveal Schickele’s wicked sense of literary humor: \nTo His Coy Mistress (Andrew Marvell)\nTo the Virgins\, to Make Much of Time (Robert Herrick)\nThe Passionate Shepherd to His Love (Christopher Marlowe)\nWhy So Pale and Wan\, Fond Lover? (Sir John Suckling)\nIt Was a Lover and His Lass (William Shakespeare)\nThe Constant Lover (Sir John Suckling)\nSong to Celia (Ben Johnson\, adapted by P.D.Q. Bach)\nFarewell\, Ungrateful Traitor (John Dryden)\nWho is Sylvia? (William Shakespeare) \nA recording of the work was released on Vanguard Records in 1980\, with a cover image of Schickele mimicking the famous image of Johannes Brahms at the piano. \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: “Walking to School” – Artworks of Juliana Crownover
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nSeptember 13 through October 28\nJuliana Crownover is an award-winning pastelist who has been painting in pastels for over 20 years and teaching for 10 years. She has a BA from Austin College in biology\, art\, and environmental studies. A member of the Southwest Pastel Society\, she describes her passion this way: “In my own art\, I use light and color to bring out the beauty in everyday life\, whether that is a trail I have hiked 100 times\, or my son hanging laundry on a line. In that way\, I use my art as a reminder of where to find beauty all around us and to slow down in our daily lives so that we may see it. In my classes\, I strive to create a balance that allows enough freedom so that students can create their own art\, and enough direction to ensure success. Aside from the end-goal of finished art\, I think the process should be enjoyed\, and I work hard to create an environment that allows for that.” \n“Walking to School” is a whimsical\, fun series chronicling my second-grade daughter’s daily walks to school. It includes mixed-media and collages of homework\, tardy slips and bit and pieces we collect on our walks. On a more profound level\, it is about being present: we put away the phone\, compose a rhyme or poem\, talk about the day\, share our hopes and dreams\, plan dinner or our next family celebration. Walking and talking just go together.” \nMore about the artist here.

SUMMARY:Closing Day: David McCullough's “Quantum Art: The Energy of Color”
DESCRIPTION:David McCullough:  “Quantum Art: The Energy of Color” \nFinal day: June 30\, 2018 \nArtist’s Statement: \nFor the past forty-eight years\, my paintings\, sculpture\, and works on paper have been concerned with describing the phenomenon of light in nature from an audio-visual perspective. \nI have hiked and created art in National Parks throughout the U.S.A.\, especially the Southwest’s ‘Canyon Circle’ parks in the Four Corners area (Arizona\, Utah\, New Mexico and Colorado)\, notating their seasonal color changes and geological formations. I have used these field trips in the National Park system to explore and notate nature’s colorful holistic psyche and geological spirit through the mediums of watercolor\, drawing\, and photography. These notations are the foundation stones of all my abstract studio compositions. I have used these nature insights to instill into my Taoist vision of art a special quality of coloration that best describes her spirit and sacred character.  I have made many comparative studies of the Earth’s holistic psyche and its geological spirit in our ecosystem\, as well as rock painting sites. for example\, the Australian Northern Territory outback\, where I made watercolors\, drawings\, and photographs at sacred Aboriginal sites in Kakadu National Park in the Arnhem land with my field notations from Southwest U.S. national parks in the Four Corners region\, where I recorded the holistic earth energy rhythms at Native American sacred sites. \nMy ethnographic studies of the sacred nature of the Native American and Aboriginal traditions and their stories\, as well as their pictographic rock art depictions\, have informed the imagery and chemistry of my abstractions in many ways. I always paint on the ground at each site directly to music from cultures all over the world\, especially American Jazz. My fellow musicians have assisted me in feeling\, expressing\, and interpreting through the watercolor medium nature’s sacred colorful ordering systems in a sonic lyrical manner. These influential audiovisual insights have infused all my studio artworks with a cosmological significance and special color-filled sonic energy. \nAll my studio artworks reflect the poetic recordings of these sacred locations and their geological and botanical micro/macro spirit world. The poetic nature of these feelings\, aesthetic character of the field artworks\, and musical insights are all woven into the patterns\, geomantic order\, and compositions of all my artworks in every combination of mediums. I have cross-referenced knowledge from mythology\, the earth sciences (mineralogy\, crystallography\, and sacred geometry)\, quantum physics and biophysics with music\, art and poetry sources in order to map out new states of consciousness I can use to process new alchemical color medium systems. These science and nature insights have empowered my artworks with a dynamic visual-sonic presence.   \nMy most recent painting adventure was in Northern India\, Rishikesh and the Northern Himalayan mountain ranges\, where I recorded the Hindu cultural operating system and experienced the ‘Diwali Festival of Light’.   \nMore about the artist here.

SUMMARY:Pianist Eldred Marshall in Recital
DESCRIPTION:Presenting Eldred Marshall\, Piano\nSunday\, March 4 at 3:00 pm\nGreat Hall\nFree parking and admission\n\nAbout the Artist:\nThe Press-Enterprise (Riverside\, CA) hailed his “dazzling technique” and his “clean\, tidy approach.” Music critic Laurence Vittes described him as an “illumination in music\,” and said of his all-Beethoven recital: “Marshall presented a recital so full of musical thrills and beauties\, and so in identification with the composer’s own persona\, that\, for a few hours\, it was as if he were communing across the centuries to conjure up a rare and magical musical spectrum.” The Telegraf Online Constanta (Romania) reported that Marshall “captivated the audience” in Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 20\, which he conducted from the piano. \nEldred Marshall began studying the piano at age six and played in public at age seven. His prodigious and inquisitive mind allowed him to master large swaths of the piano repertoire quickly as well as consistently win top prizes at the competitions he entered as a child. By 16\, he debuted with orchestra\, playing Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto with the Victor Valley Symphony Orchestra. Before entering Yale University\, where he graduated with honors with a B.A. in Political Science\, he had already performed all over the United States. \nThe critically-acclaimed pianist has performed internationally: Spain\, Italy\, the Republic of San Marino\, Belgium\, Germany Romania\, Bulgaria\, and Ukraine. He has twice performed the entire 32 Piano Sonatas of Beethoven in public\, from memory\, as a concentrated series: once in Portland in 2007 and again in San Francisco in 2008. He followed that project with a full West Coast tour of Bach’s Goldberg Variations in 2008 and 2009. In the 2015-2016 Season\, he toured extensively through Texas with two all-Bach piano recital programs\, one of which included the Goldberg Variations. SUMMARY:The Color of Hope: Abstract Expressions Sundays though March 4
DESCRIPTION:The Color of Hope\nAbstract Expressions in Acrylic and Collage by Margo Lee Miller\nIncluding work inspired by experiences in Nepal \nThrough March 4\, 2018\nFree parking and admission \nFrom the artist:\nI currently work with acrylic and collage\, combining elements like gold foil\, traditional Lokta papers\, painted images\, and ephemera to create movement\, pattern and evoke emotion. The images are built of layers that simultaneously reveal and obscure\, push and pull the viewer in and out of the artwork. You can feel the influence of music and dance in the pulsing rhythms of color and design. My work examines the complexity of our lives and emotions and reminds us that we are not our most obvious expression\, but a complicated compilation of all our past experiences and our future hopes and dreams. I invite the viewer to make their own revelations as they explore the surface and depth of these works. \nThis exhibit includes work inspired by the incredible sense of joy I felt from the people of Nepal when I visited in October as part of a mission trip. I was awed by the happiness and resilience that these people show in the face of poverty. Their country is one of vibrant colors\, an appropriate palette for the beautiful countryside filled with flowers and cities filled with life.\n15% of the proceeds from any sales of these artworks will go to the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation so that they may continue to support the medical mission trip to the Lower Solukhumbu region of Nepal. One painting\, “Marigolds” will be on sale for $1\,500.00. The entire $1\,500.00 will be donated to The Hope Home for Girls\, an orphanage in Kathmandu. This amount of money will feed\, clothe\, and educate one girl for an entire year. \nVisit Margo Lee Miller online HERE.
