She is University Distinguished Professor of Art History Emerita at Southern Methodist University. Proficient in music and languages as well as art history\, Comini brought an interdisciplinary approach to her study of the arts in Austria and Germany at the turn of the 20th century\, an approach particularly suited to the integrated art forms of fin-de-siècle Vienna. \nEarly and personal life\nAlessandra Comini was born the daughter of Megan Laird and Raiberto Comini in Winona\, Minnesota. Her earliest years were spent in Barcelona\, Milan\, and Dallas. Comini received her B.A. from Barnard College (1956)\, her M.A\, from the University of California\, Berkeley (1964)\, and her Ph.D. from Columbia University (1969). Her dissertation on the topic of Egon Schiele’s portraiture was written under Theodore Reff. \nIn 1974\, she began her decades of collaboration with art historian Eleanor Tufts at Southern Methodist University. \nCareer\nWhile teaching at Columbia between 1965 and 1974\, Comini became one of the founders of the Women’s Caucus for Art in 1972. She taught at Southern Methodist University from 1974 until 2005. And she guest taught at the University of California\, Berkeley (1967) and Yale University (1973). Voted outstanding professor sixteen times by her students\, Comini served as the Alfred Hodder Resident Humanist at Princeton University (1972–1973) and was named Distinguished Visiting Lecturer at Oxford University’s European Humanities Research Centre (1996). \nCelebrated for her witty\, erudite\, and compelling public lectures\, Comini has been in demand as a guest speaker nationally and internationally. As an interdisciplinary speaker\, Comini lectured repeatedly at the Leipzig Gewandhaus symposia\, The Santa Fe Opera\, and for the Indianapolis and Dallas Symphony Orchestras. \nIn 1990 Comini was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in recognition of her contributions to Germanic culture. \nIn 2014 Comini turned to fiction writing and has published nine art history murder mystery novels since in the Megan Crespi Series. \nThe Neue Galerie Museum for German and Austrian Art\, New York\, commissioned Comini to curate its blockbuster exhibition Egon Schiele’s Portraits (2014–15). \nHonors and Awards\nComini’s book Egon Schiele’s Portraits (1974) was nominated for a National Book Award (1975) and received the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Book Award (1976). They also brought their religious convictions. And they expressed all of it in architecture and art. Many religious traditions are observed by believers at their homes. Jews\, Hindus\, Muslims\, Buddhists\, Christians and others also practice their spirituality in places of prayer they create for their constituents and for the communities that they serve. The New York City-based Tepfer\, born in 1982 in Paris to American parents\, has recorded and performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music\, from Lee Konitz to Renée Fleming\, and released ten albums of his own in solo\, duo and trio formats. \nTepfer earned global acclaim for his 2011 release Goldberg Variations / Variations\, a disc that sees him performing J.S. Bach’s masterpiece as well as improvising upon it—to “elegant\, thoughtful and thrilling” effect (New York magazine). Tepfer’s newest video album\, Natural Machines\, stands as one of his most ingeniously forward-minded yet\, finding him exploring in real time the intersection between science and art\, coding and improvisation\, digital algorithms and the rhythms of the heart. Other highlights include guest appearances with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra\, Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Oregon East Symphony. \nDedicated to promoting the works of Black and other underrepresented composers\, McCain curates Black Composers Concerts for multiple arts organizations and is an American Prize winner for her solo piano recordings of these works. She won a Gold Global Music Award for her recent album project\, Heritage. In 2021\, Hal Leonard published her transcriptions of 24 Traditional African American Folk Songs. \nMcCain was a featured inspirational leader in the award-winning PBS documentary series Roadtrip Nation: Degree of Impact\, in an episode exploring the real-world impact of professionals with doctoral degrees in and outside of academia. \nMcCain’s performances have been heard on radio Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK)\, Germany’s WDR and in television appearances including features on CSPAN for the MLK 50 Commemoration. McCain is a three-time Global Music Awards winner\, including the collaborative projects “I\, Too” (Naxos) with soprano Icy Monroe\, focused on African-American spirituals and art songs\, and “Shades\,” a collaboration with her husband and duo partner Martin McCain. \nAfter not performing for six years while battling a performance injury\, she now enjoys a prolific career with more than ten years of full recovery. She uses her recovery to serve as an advocate of musicians’ wellness\, curating articles\, lectures and forums to educate teachers and students. McCain has presented on wellness and other topics at universities\, the Music Teachers National Association Conference and the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy. \nMcCain graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University. She received her Master of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music and holds a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently Associate Professor of Piano and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music of the University of Memphis and Co-Founder/Director of the Memphis International Piano Festival and Competition. Leach\, tenor\nMary Dibbern\, piano\nSunday\, October 23 at 3:00 pm\nCollora Piano Recital Hall\n1451 Wycliff Avenue\, Dallas \nThis exciting new CD project\, Mary Howe: Songs and Duets\, organized by Cathedral Arts and supported by a deeply appreciated grant from the Puccini Society of Dallas\, has produced a recording of selected concert songs for voice and piano by the celebrated American composer and champion of the arts\, Mary Howe. In addition to 18 published solo songs for high voice (soprano or tenor)\, the recording includes three duets by Howe\, two previously unpublished\, using manuscripts held in the Mary Howe Papers of the New York Public Library. The project was produced by Martin Anderson at London’s Toccata Classics\, which produces first recordings under the motto: “Forgotten Music by Great Composers\, Great Music by Forgotten Composers.” \nMary Howe (1882-1964)\nBorn in Richmond\, Virginia\, Mary Howe was an American composer\, pianist\, and perhaps the most well-known woman involved with the burgeoning musical cultural revolution in Washington D.C. during the first half of the 20th century. At the age of 18\, she entered the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore to study music; she continued her studies in Dresden\, and later in Paris. After marrying and having three children\, Howe returned to Peabody and graduated with a diploma in composition. Her works include numerous vocal and instrumental chamber works\, solo piano music\, and over twenty orchestral pieces\, many of which were written during summers at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. She played solo and duo-piano recitals privately and professionally and toured over a period of many years as part of a piano duo. She and her husband were among the co-founders of the National Symphony Orchestra\, where she served as the symphony’s first director. Howe helped found the Chamber Music Society of Washington\, later known as the Friends of Music of the Library of Congress\, and the Society of American Women Composers. She was the first woman on the faculty of New York University’s Department of Music. Late in her career\, Howe served on the board of the National Cultural Center\, later renamed the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. \nEvent flyer here. \nFree admission and parking.

The trio made its formal debut at Dallas’ 2019 Basically Beethoven Festival with a recital entitled “The American Sound\,” about which the Dallas Morning News wrote\, “the ensemble’s style fit the character of the music like a tailored suit.” Other recent reviews describe the trio as having “an incredibly rich sound” (Cry Havoc Theater) and as “mind-blowing to hear such transcendental difficulties played with a combination of technical mastery and keen musical insight” (Theater Jones). MAKE has created a performance concept called “The Classical Lounge” to bring audiences closer to music\, starting as a channel of professional music videos and documentary-style film shoots about being a musician and working in a classical chamber ensemble. To further this vision\, MAKE partnered with SamsungVR (Virtual Reality) to produce three-dimensional\, 360-degree classical music public concerts; these videos have been viewed in over forty countries.
