SUMMARY:Sundermann Gallery Exhibit Opening: Ichilian: Father and Son
DESCRIPTION:Artworks by Sarkis Avedis Ichilian\nand Harold James Ichilian\nJustus Sundermann Gallery\nAugust 28 – September 30 \nEvent flyer here.\nSt. Matthew’s parishioner Adele Ichilian provides these introductory notes for the exhibition: \nMy grandfather\, Sarkis Avedis Ichilian\, was born in Armenia on June 12\, 1871. Raised in a cultured family\, he traveled throughout the Near East and France. He immigrated to the US thru Canada\, settling in Washington\, D.C. in the early 1900s. Sarkis married in 1903 and had two children\, Anna Hripsime and Harold James (my father). Naturalized in 1924\, he spoke Armenian\, Arabic\, French and English. Sarkis died on July 21\, 1940\, and was buried in Lincoln Cemetery in Washington\, D.C. beside his wife\, Statira. \nMy father\, Harold James Ichilian\, was born on May 13\, 1912\, and raised in Washington\, D.C. A graduate of George Washington University with a degree in Library Sciences\, he was also fluent in French and German. Due to prejudice in the early 1900s against those from the Near East\, his father sadly ceased teaching him Armenian\, stating that he was an American child and must speak English\, much to my father’s regret years later. Drafted into the Army in 1942\, he was sent to Italy in January of 1944. Harold spent the duration of WWII in Grottaglia\, near Taranto in the instep of the heel of Italy. At war’s end\, he returned to the US in May of 1945 on the Queen Mary\, one of over 9\,000 troops aboard the ship. Harold married in 1943 and had one daughter. He worked for the Library of Congress\, the Department of Defense\, and as a civilian journalist for the US Navy until the early 1960s. Upon retirement\, he spent sixteen months traveling throughout Europe. Harold died on June 3\, 2001\, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery\, Dallas\, along with his wife\, Rozelle. \nNeither Sarkis nor Harold received formal art training. Sarkis liked to paint scenes from his memories of the old country\, and from visits to the Maryland seashore. He worked primarily in oils\, pastels and charcoal. Following in his father’s footsteps\, Harold began sketching during his childhood. As an adult\, his subjects were primarily landscapes and animals\, employing both pastels and oils. During the war\, he made pastel sketches while stationed in Italy\, refining them into larger paintings years later (three of these paintings appear in the exhibit). \nInterestingly\, both my grandfather and father wrote poetry (examples of their poetry are included in the exhibit). My father particularly liked to write sonnets. My grandfather’s poems are in his native language\, which my friend Boghos Kirazian has translated and reported that they are quite melancholy. They undoubtedly reflect his sadness of not being able to go back for visits after the tragic genocide of more than one million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

DESCRIPTION:THE FACETS OF LOVE\nA Benefit Recital for St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts\nwith\nMICHELLE PEREZ\, SOPRANO\nSTEPHEN CAREY\, PIANO\nMUSIC OF MANUEL DE FALLA\, MAX REGER\, CHARLES GOUNOD\,\nFERNANDO OBRADORS\, FRANZ LISZT\, GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL\,\nLIBBY LARSON\, LIN MANUEL MIRANDA AND STEPHEN FLAHERTY\nSoprano Michelle Perez currently serves as the associate director of choral activities at Mesquite High School and the Texas Music Educators Association Region III Vocal Chair. Originally from the Rio Grande Valley\, Michelle has enjoyed performing throughout the U.S.\, and with professional local and liturgical choirs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area\, including the St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts Choral Artists. A graduate of the University of North Texas\, Michelle holds a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education. While at UNT\, she studied with Alan McClung\, Jerry McCoy\, Jeffrey Snider\, and Richard Sparks. As a member of UNT choirs\, Michelle enjoyed a variety of national and international performance opportunities. Michelle will graduate with her Masters in Music Education this May at Southern Methodist University and will pursue a Masters in Vocal performance under a full scholarship to Arizona State University in the Fall of 2021. \nPianist Stephen Carey is a native of York\, Pennsylvania. Stephen has his bachelor of music degree from West Virginia University\, and his master of music degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Both of his degrees are in piano performance and collaborative piano. From the fall of 2001 through the spring of 2013\, Mr. Carey worked for Opera Memphis\, where he ultimately served as assistant artistic director\, director of the young artist program\, chorus master\, assistant conductor\, and rehearsal pianist/vocal coach. Then\, from the fall of 2013 through the spring of 2018\, Mr. Carey worked for Fort Worth Opera\, where he served as principal pianist and vocal coach. From the fall of 2018 through the spring of 2019\, Mr. Carey served as the assistant music director for the opera program at the University of North Texas. In 2020 he joined the music faculty of the Seagle Festival\, the premier opera and musical theater producing organization in the Adirondack region of upstate New York\, as well as the oldest summer vocal training program in the United States. Details to follow.\nComplete Recital Program and Notes HERE. \nEvent Flyer HERE. \n \nQuickly becoming one of the most talked-about and sought after musical ambassadors to Generation Z\, violinist Chloé Trevor has combined her technical brilliance\, spirit for classical music and her passion for mentoring the youth of today to connect with audiences in exciting and innovative ways. Silver medalist of the Ima Hogg Competition\, critics have acclaimed Chloé for her “dazzling technique”\, “excellent musicianship”\, “huge tone”\, “poise and professional grace”\, and “bold personality unafraid to exult in music and ability”. She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras worldwide\, including the Hong Kong Sinfonietta\, Latvian Chamber Orchestra\, Slovak State Philharmonic\, Plano Symphony\, and the Knoxville Symphony. She made her New York concerto debut in 2013 and Avery Fisher Hall debut in 2014. Chloé was the Grand Prize winner at the 2006 Lynn Harrell Competition and the 2005 Lennox Competition. She has been a featured soloist with the Dallas Symphony at the Meyerson Symphony Center\, and with the Missouri Symphony on tour throughout the state. At age thirteen she appeared on the nationally syndicated radio program From the Top. Chloé has appeared as a soloist with the Lutoslawski Filharmonie (Poland)\, the Teplice Philharmonic (Czech Republic)\, and a tour with the Latvian Chamber Orchestra. She was also invited as a soloist in the Young Prague Spring Festival to give recitals and perform the Mendelssohn Concerto in and around Prague. More recent performances included Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the Dallas Symphony and Prokofiev’s 2nd Concerto both at Sala São Paulo in Brazil and with the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra as a result of winning the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Concerto Competition. She went on to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the Houston Symphony and recitals at the Music in the Mountains Festival with pianist David Korevaar. She opened the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra’s 2010-11 season with the Barber Violin Concerto and the Missouri Symphony’s “Hot Summer Nights” 2011 Opening Gala with the Brahms Concerto. She returned to perform the Beethoven Concerto with the Knoxville Symphony for their Diamond anniversary season. \nChloé was introduced to the violin at age 2 by her mother\, Heidi Trevor Itashiki\, a Dallas Symphony violinist. She later studied with Arkady Fomin\, Dallas Symphony violinist and Artistic Director of the New Conservatory of Dallas. Chloé has made numerous appearances on the concert stage with her father\, internationally recognized conductor and teacher\, Kirk Trevor. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with David and Linda Cerone\, and her graduate degree as a scholarship student at Rice University studying with Kenneth Goldsmith. In July of 2019 he made his debut at the Basically Beethoven Music Festival in Dallas\, playing together with violinist Grace Kang and clarinetist Danny Goldman\, where the group was described by the Dallas Morning News as “The ensemble’s style fit the character of the music like a tailored suit.” In September of 2019 the group began their debut concert season with concerts around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. \nHis list of awards include prizes at some of the most prestigious international piano competitions such as Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia (Fourth Prize and Special Prize)\, BNDES International Piano Competition in Rio de Janeiro (Silver Medal and Special Prize)\, National MTNA Competition in New York (Third Prize)\, Eric Sorantin Young Artist Award\, Judith Solomon Piano Award in Chamber Music\, Harold von Mickwitz Piano Award\, Dmitri Shostakovich National Junior Competition\, Voronezh Central Music School National Competition\, Stanislav Neuhaus International Piano Competition\, and The International Delphic Games Competition (Gold Medal). \nHe holds degrees from The Gnessin Russian Academy of Music\, where he studied with Irina Grebenkina\, Andrei Khitruk\, Alexei Skavronsky and Vladimir Tropp\, from Texas Christian University with Dr. Tamas Ungar and from Southern Methodist University with Joaquin Achucarro. \nMikhail Berestnev has begun his second season as a guest artist with the Musica Nova Ensemble at the University of Texas at Dallas\, as a soloist and collaborative pianist under the direction of renowned American composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez. \nHe is also a collaborative pianist for the DFW-based ballet company and school Texas Ballet Theater\, with CEO Ben Stevenson. \nVisit Mikhail Berestnev online here. \nFree parking and admission.

DESCRIPTION:Renowned Greek iconographer Theodoros Papadopoulos leads summer painting workshops across Europe and the U.S. He is offering a six-day workshop in the Greek Byzantine style at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. The workshop will be held Monday-Saturday\, June 15-20 from 9:00 to 5:00 each day. The cost for the course is $685. Most of the materials are included. You do not have to be a highly-skilled artist to enroll\, only someone seeking to deepen their spirituality. Because of the intense nature of instruction\, only twelve students are allowed. \nPlease contact Valerie Kaiser at valvkaiser@gmail.com for more detailed information. \nFrom the Artist: \nThe obligations and responsibilities of an iconographer who takes over the illustration of a holy church are enormous. I do not think there is a greater challenge for such an artist than taking on such a project. It is very easy to fill the walls with icons. But for me merely filling space is not significant. The most important part is the study of the church’s architecture\, which will lead to a building taking on the appearance of one whole area which appears united by its surroundings. I strive to understand the interior of the church as a single composition\, where all the pieces must be connected and in full color and architectural harmony.  The fragmentation of the surface with multiple partitions into small and disconnected painting issues may cause disharmony and tension to the viewer-believer. The artist’s work should help to achieve harmony\, humility\, inner peace and tranquility in order to prepare believers for the sacrament of the Eucharist. \nThe iconographer’s work resembles that of a priest. As St. Theodosius the Hermit says\, “One composes the blood of Christ\, and the other presents it”. Iconography is a religious act. The artist’s mission is to translate the images he presents into spirit in order to touch the soul of the believer with his work. Being aware of the seriousness and the importance of such a project\, and being a strict judge of my own work\, I have set as my main objective to present a work which fulfills its purpose and remains faithful to the spirit and doctrine of the Orthodox Church. But iconography should not be characterized by static\, photocopying and sterile imitation of past images. Starting with concerts in southern Ontario\, the project will culminate in a recording session at the Immanuelskirche in Wuppertal this coming June. \nShe writes:\nI barely remember how the idea came to me to do a recording of piano music by women of the 19th century. It has been full-on researching and practicing ever since\, and I am smitten by each and every composer that comprises this program! The time has come for this music to be heard far and wide\, and I aim to do my part to shine some light on these undeservedly overlooked gorgeous gems. That’s where the project’s title comes from: “en pleine lumière” (in full light). \nThe idea to do a recording has actually been steadily evolving\, such that the scope of the project will turn into more of a life’s mission. The focus on solo piano repertoire will expand into song repertoire and chamber music involving the piano\, beginning with the 19th century and progressing through to the present day. My vision is that through recordings\, live performances\, video projects and podcasts\, I can help to bring these deserving artists to a wider audience.  \nOn Saturday\, February 8 at 10:00 am\, Ms. Mogensen will return to the Great Hall to conduct a master class with outstanding young artists from Texas Woman’s University\, Texas Christian University\, Southern Methodist University and the University of North Texas. Admission is free to the public. Donations are welcomed. \nAbout the Artist:\nCopenhagen-based pianist Sandra Mogensen is equally at home in two worlds: performing as a solo pianist and co-performing with singers in recital. She has played in concert in both capacities in Canada\, the United States\, Denmark\, Latvia\, Iceland\, Norway\, Sweden\, the Netherlands\, and Austria. Sandra is also well-known as a vocal coach and piano pedagogue. \nSandra’s first CD recording (2001) was of Schubert’s cycle of 24 songs\, Winterreise\, with Germany-based Canadian bass Paul Sketris. The two artists have been friends since childhood\, when their first musical collaborations included playing piano duets\, singing the Latvian folk songs of their common heritage\, and playing in the same high school jazz band. The Winterreise recording was produced by Anton Kwiatkowski and was recorded at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto. \nSandra returned to the Glenn Gould Studio to record her first solo album in December 2006 for a 2007 release in conjunction with the Edvard Grieg centenary. SANDRA MOGENSEN: Piano Music of Edvard Grieg\, produced by Earl McCluskie\, was warmly received and praised. A second disc of Grieg’s piano music (SANDRA MOGENSEN: Piano Music of Edvard Grieg Volume 2) followed in 2009\, and SANDRA MOGENSEN: Piano Music of Edvard Grieg Volume 3\, again produced by Earl McCluskie\, was released in 2012. A fourth disc of Grieg’s 12 Songs\, Op.33 with American soprano\, Laura Loge\, and 19 Norwegian Folk Tunes\, Op.66\, was released in 2017. \nSandra Mogensen did her early musical studies with her mother\, Edite Mogensen\, in Sarnia\, Ontario. Sandra’s further training as a pianist has taken her to study with Damjana Bratuz at the University of Western Ontario\, the Orff-Instiut Abteilung of the Mozarteum in Salzburg\, the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen where she studied with Friedrich Gürtler\, and to Westminster Choir College in Princeton\, New Jersey\, where she received the Master’s of Music in Vocal Coaching and Accompanying\, studying with J.J. Penna and Dalton Baldwin. \nSandra Mogensen was a founding member of Canada’s National Piano Trio. A versatile musician\, Sandra has extensive experience with chamber music\, musical theater and choral repertoire\, as well as music in liturgy. Well-versed in English\, French\, German\, Italian\, Danish and Latvian\, Ms. Mogensen is well known for her language and diction coaching. Ms. Mogensen has had an extensive teaching career and enjoys mentoring musicians in their processes of self-discovery and artistic development. \nSandra is drawn to the music of recent and living composers\, as well as jazz and the art of improvisation. As a curator of musical experiences\, Sandra seeks to reinvent and reinvigorate the recital format and heighten the listener’s experience of connection\, relevance and meaning. SUMMARY:Cathedral Arts Book Review Club: The Women Who Wrote the War
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist\, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday\, January 14 at 10:30 am\, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Mary Booty from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association\, in a lively discussion of The Women Who Wrote the War: The Compelling Story of the Path-breaking Women War Correspondents of World War II by Nancy Caldwell Sorel. \nHere’s how a hundred brave American women left their families and entered the combat-zone to chronicle what they saw. Nancy Sorel’s portrait pays homage to these unsung heroes. They came from Boston\, New York\, Milwaukee\, and St. Louis; from Yakima\, Washington; Austin\, Texas; and Sioux City\, Iowa; from San Francisco and all points east. They left comfortable homes and safe surroundings for combat-zone duty. As women war correspondents\, they brought to the battlefields of World War II a fresh optic\, and reported back home what they witnessed with a new sensibility. Their experience was at once wide-ranging and intimate\, devastating at one moment\, heartwarming the next. In their ranks we encounter world-famous photojournalist Margaret Bourke-White\, the only Western photographer to cover the Nazi invasion of the USSR; Martha Gellhorn\, writer and wife of Ernest Hemingway\, who presciently reported on the menace of fascism; The New Yorker’s Janet Flanner\, recording the bleak realities of life in post-liberation France; and Marguerite Higgins\, who dared enter the concentration camp at Dachau just ahead of the American army. SUMMARY:Pianist Darío Llanos Javierre in Recital
DESCRIPTION:Keyboard music of\nJohann Sebastian Bach\nJoaquín Turina\nFranz Liszt\nPraised for “demonstrating exactly how a real musician can possess a limitless reserve of technical strength\, (…) always placed in subservience to the uncompromising musical demands of the score” (Musical Opinion) and for his “clarity and exceptional tonal control” (Musical Opinion)\, Darío Llanos Javierre has been hailed as having an “intellectually probing pianism of forensic intensity\, but delivered without fuss or excessive gesture” (The Liszt Society Newsletter). He is currently based between Madrid\, his home town\, and Dallas\, where he held a teaching fellowship in the College of Music at the University of North Texas for his Graduate Artist Certificate in Music Performance with Maestro Joseph Banowetz. He was nominated for the 2019 Outstanding Teaching Fellow award. \nHe combines a passion for teaching with his performance career\, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. In spite of his specialization in the Romantic repertoire\, he has given world premiere performances of numerous living composers\, such as Alexander Tchaikovsky\, José Buenagu and Miguel del Barco. In 2020 Darío will release a recording of Miguel del Barco’s complete works for piano on Toccata Classics\, distributed internationally by Naxos\, the biggest recording label in the world. In 2014 he was awarded the first prize in the International Piano Prize organized by The Liszt Society in London for his interpretation of the Troisième Année of Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage. Since then\, he is regularly invited by The Liszt Society\, The Keyboard Charitable Trust and Master Musicians International to give series of recitals across England. His outstanding acquaintance of Franz Liszt’s work was acknowledged again in 2016\, being a prizewinner in the Los Angeles Franz Liszt International Piano Competition. During the Summer of 2018 he recorded the chamber music works for double reed instruments and piano by Roger Boutry as part of The Boutry Ensemble and members of the Dallas Opera Orchestra and Dallas Winds in Paris for the label UTA Records. In the works are the publication of a research project titled “The critical spirit of the performer” for the International University of La Rioja\, in Spain\, and a critical edition of the works for piano of Spanish composer Miguel del Barco. \nDarío is currently active in several concert circuits at both sides of the Atlantic. In the last two years he has given over 150 recitals in concert halls in the United States\, Spain\, Germany\, France and the United Kingdom. For the 20th anniversary of the passing of Spanish pianist Esteban Sánchez\, he was invited to perform Jose Buenagu’s Rhapsody-Tribute (on pianistic themes by Esteban Sánchez)\, followed by Franz Liszt’s Concerto No. 2 in A major\, S125\, one of Sánchez’s favorites\, in Badajoz (Spain) with the Orquesta de Extremadura. Darío’s remarkable repertoire includes over 100 works for piano solo and many concertos for piano and orchestra\, in addition to a wide range of works for different chamber music ensembles. \nHis musical career began during his formative stage at Kensington School in Pozuelo\, Madrid. He studied with Maestro Jacobo Ponce at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. He specialized in contemporary piano repertoire with renowned pianist Sebastián Mariné\, and deepened his study of harmony and improvisation with Emilio Molina. In 2010\, he graduated achieving the highest possible mark: Matrícula de Honor. Since then\, he has continued developing his understanding of music and its approach through the piano\, attending courses with Leslie Howard\, Roy Howat\, Daniel Pollack\, Peter Frankl\, Murray McLachlan\, Steven Osborne\, Carlo Grante\, Steven Vanhauwaert\, Arpad Bodó\, Pascal Devoyon and Rikako Murata. Along with his performing career\, Darío has been deeply committed to pedagogy\, graduating in 2013 at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid in Piano Pedagogy as a second degree\, obtaining the highest marks. DESCRIPTION:A Photographic Exhibition by Carolyn Brown\nJustus Sundermann Gallery\nNovember 14 through January 3\nMake a joyful noise to the Lord\, all the earth;\nBreak forth into joyous song and sing praises!\nSing praises to the Lord with the harp\,\nwith the lyre and the sound of melody!\nWith trumpets and the sound of the horn\,\nmake a joyful noise before the King\, the Lord.\nfrom Psalm 98 \n\n \n“One of the more delightful and instructive elements in these religiously-themed ceilings is their portrayal of music and musicians. While the musicians themselves are usually depicted as angels or archangels\, on occasion\, saints or biblical figures with well-known musical connections are also shown as performers. Together with the invariably charming representation of angelic musicians\, these portrayals can also provide us with valuable historical insight\, not only into the period instruments themselves and how they were played\, but also on the larger role played by music and musicians in the religious life and ritual of Purépecha villagers during colonial and post-colonial times. Period instruments portrayed on the ceilings reveal considerable variety and fall into two broad categories: string and wind instruments. Stringed instruments include the violin (viola da brachia) viola (viola da gamba) and bass viol\, as well as the mandolin and harp. Wind instruments on display comprise the shawm (chirimía)\,  horn\, trumpet\, trombone (sackbut) and bassoon. Organs are also shown\, ranging from modest table models to ornate baroque pipe organs. Portrayals of musicians are usually shown in proximity to the raised choirs of the church or chapel\, sometimes above or on adjacent panels but in some cases beneath\, on a painted sotocoro\, or under choir. Although not always so placed\, strings are generally shown on the left\, or north side of the church while the brass and woodwinds appear on the right (south)—locations that no doubt reflect the traditional musical or choral practices of the time.
