SUMMARY:Cathedral Arts Book Review
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1930’s\, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist\, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday\, November 12 at 10:30 am\, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Susan Boone from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association\, in a lively discussion of The Other Alcott\, a novel by Elise Hooper. \nStylish\, outgoing\, creative May Alcott grows up longing to experience the wide world beyond Concord\, Massachusetts. While her sister Louisa crafts stories\, May is a talented and dedicated artist\, one who takes art lessons in Boston\, turns down a marriage proposal from a well-off suitor\, and faces scorn for entering what is very much a man’s profession. Life for the Alcott family has never been easy. When\nLouisa’s novel\, Little Women\, is published its success eases the financial burdens the family has been facing for so many years. Everyone agrees the novel is charming\, but May is struck to the core by her\nsister’s portrayal of her as the selfish\, spoiled Amy March and left wondering if this is what her sister thinks of her. May embarks on a quest to discover her identity\, as an artist and a woman. From Boston to Rome\, London\, and Paris\, this brave and determined soul forges an amazing life of her own\, making her so much more than merely “The Other Alcott”. \nThese second Tuesday meetings in the Justus Sundermann Gallery include a 10:30 coffee\, 10:45 presentation and an optional Club Members luncheon at 11:35 ($20.00 for non-members). Please contact Andrea Foster at 214.341.3432 by Thursday\, November 7 to make a lunch reservation. \nEvent flyer here.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: The Supernatural Among Us: Photography by Roger Shackelford
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nSeptember 15 through October 31\n“My focus is creating or reenacting moments that suggest the supernatural among us. Incredible peace and stillness have come over me even in the darkest of hours when I was left a quadriplegic by a rare spinal cord disorder. These images are an attempt to capture those events or relate the state of being that embodies them. Art is a shared experience\, so at some level I hope to relate to the human condition motivated by a sense of need for the transcendent. \nThe majority of my photographs are composed in-camera without Photoshop. They are not photo-composites. I shoot from two to eight exposures on a single frame of 120mm film using either an 80mm lens\, handmade pinhole\, or a combination of both. These combinations are like meditation in that I never see the final image until the film is processed. In the meantime\, I consider color\, shape and form as I overlap exposures. Unlike a regular camera\, you cannot look through the lens of a pinhole because it is a camera without a lens. I sometimes use masks to cover portions of the 80mm lens as I juxtapose images in relation to one another in multiple exposures. The film negative allows me to shoot at different locations on different days as I combine images\, unlike a digital camera. I use this process to facilitate meditative or transcendent images that look familiar but are strange to the known or real world.” – Roger Shackelford \nRead an article about Roger Shackelford at voyagedallas.com. \nEvent flyer here.

SUMMARY:Byzantine Icon Painting Workshop with Theodoros Papadopoulos
DESCRIPTION:Renowned Greek iconographer Theodoros Papadopoulos leads summer painting workshops across Europe and the U.S. He is offering a six-day workshop in the Greek Byzantine style at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. The workshop will be August 5–10 from 9:00 to 4:30 each day. The cost for the course is $685. Most of the materials are included. You do not have to be a highly-skilled artist to enroll\, only someone seeking to deepen their spirituality. Because of the intense nature of instruction\, only twelve students are allowed. \nPlease contact Valerie Kaiser at valvkaiser@gmail.com for more detailed information. \nFrom the Artist: \nThe obligations and responsibilities of an iconographer who takes over the illustration of a holy church are enormous. I do not think there is a greater challenge for such an artist than taking on such a project. It is very easy to fill the walls with icons. But for me merely filling space is not significant. The most important part is the study of the church’s architecture\, which will lead to a building taking on the appearance of one whole area which appears united by its surroundings. I strive to understand the interior of the church as a single composition\, where all the pieces must be connected and in full color and architectural harmony.  The fragmentation of the surface with multiple partitions into small and disconnected painting issues may cause disharmony and tension to the viewer-believer. The artist’s work should help to achieve harmony\, humility\, inner peace and tranquility in order to prepare believers for the sacrament of the Eucharist. \nThe iconographer’s work resembles that of a priest. As St. Theodosius the Hermit says\, “One composes the blood of Christ\, and the other presents it”. Iconography is a religious act. The artist’s mission is to translate the images he presents into spirit in order to touch the soul of the believer with his work. Being aware of the seriousness and the importance of such a project\, and being a strict judge of my own work\, I have set as my main objective to present a work which fulfills its purpose and remains faithful to the spirit and doctrine of the Orthodox Church. But iconography should not be characterized by static\, photocopying and sterile imitation of past images. The artist must widen\, enrich and constantly renew his work. – Theodoros Papadopoulos

SUMMARY:Closing Reception: “Afghan Odyssey - 1967” – Photographs by Richard Boul
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nClosing Reception with the Artist\n“Over fifty years have passed since I took these photographs in Afghanistan. These landscapes and portraits should be viewed simply for what they are\, from a traveler’s viewpoint without any depiction of politics or the presence of a foreign power which have been the lot of this small yet pivotal country since that time. This was a quiet interlude in Afghan history where one could travel freely and without fear in this ancient tribal land. The people here are proud and fiercely independent\, even xenophobic\, but at the same time welcoming beyond one’s expectations. Their history goes back to the end of the 4th millennium BC\, but more recently in 330 BC the area was colonized by Alexander the Great and the Greek language was introduced. By the 3rd century BC the area had already become the crossroads of Asia and to this day one sees the influence of Persian\, Indian and Greek ideas. Afghanistan was on the Silk Route\, stretching 700 miles from China to Greece\, and one sees the Greek influence\, (as shown in several photographs included in the exhibit) especially in the two standing Buddhas in Bamian\, which itself was on the Silk Route. Subsequently\, Bamian was totally destroyed and its entire population put to the sword by Genghis Khan in 1220 AD. So\, turbulence is no newcomer to Afghanistan but in spite of it all\, one is left with an overwhelming sense of history and culture.” – Richard Boul \nVisit Richard Boul online here.

SUMMARY:Master Class with Émile Naoumoff
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 9 at 9:30 am\nGreat Hall\nFree parking and admission \n2018-19 Distinguished Artist Émile Naoumoff returns to St. Matthew’s to conduct a master class with select young pianists and a chamber music ensemble from Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts. \n \nÉmile Naoumoff is Associate Professor of Music in piano at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music\, where he has been on the faculty since 1998. He has been likened to both Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein as a pianist\, displaying — as one critic remarked — the fire of the former and the poetry of the latter. Émile revealed himself as a musical prodigy at age five\, taking up the piano and adding composition to his studies a year later. At the age of seven\, after a fateful meeting in Paris\, he became the last disciple of the legendary Nadia Boulanger\, who referred to him as “The gift of my old age.” He studied with her until her death in late 1979. During this auspicious apprenticeship\, Mlle. Boulanger gave him the opportunity to work with Clifford Curzon\, Igor Markevitch\, Robert and Gaby Casadesus\, Nikita Magaloff\, Jean Francaix\, Leonard Bernstein\, Soulima Stravinsky\, Aram Khachaturian and Yehudi Menuhin. Lord Menuhin conducted the premiere of Émile’s first piano concerto\, with the composer as a soloist\, when he was ten years old. At the same time\, he pursued music courses at the Paris Conservatory with Lelia Gousseau\, Pierre Sancan\, and Genevieve Joy-Dutilleux\, and studied conducting at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with Pierre Dervaux. \nÉmile regularly appears with the world’s premier orchestras: the Los Angeles Philharmonic\, the Berlin Symphony\, the Vienna Symphony\, the San Francisco Symphony\, National Symphony in Washington\, Moscow Symphony\, NHK Symphony\, the Residentie Orkest of the Hague\, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France\, Camerata Bern\, and has worked closely with conductors such as Leonard Bernstein\, Igor Markevitch\, Leonard Slatkin\, Mstislav Rostropovich and Eliahu Inbal. His musical collaborations include Jean-Pierre Rampal\, Gerard Souzay\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Gary Hoffman\, Olivier Charlier\, Patrice Fontanarosa\, Regis Pasquier\, Philippe Graffin\, Philippe Bernold\, Gerard Caussé\, Jean Ferrandis\, Dominique de Williencourt and the Fine Arts Quartet. \nHighlights of his career include a performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl\, and his own piano concerto version of Moussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich. In recent years Émile has been invited to numerous music festivals\, including the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music’s Menuhin Seminars\, Santander Summer Masterclasses\, Verbier Academy Festival\, the Banff Center\, and residencies at Conservatory of Barcelona (ESMUC). In 1996\, he opened his own summer academy at the Château de Rangiport in Gargenville\, France\, in the spirit of Nadia Boulanger. He is an avid composer of French mélodies\, and is known for his mastery in transcribing music for the piano. Émile maintains a video journal of daily improvisations on his YouTube channel. \nRead more about the artist here.

SUMMARY:Closing Reception: “Sacred Space - Visual Voice” – Works by Annie Ehrenreich
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nThrough December 16\nAnnie Ehrenreich found herself fascinated by colorful Christian Medieval artwork\, causing her to experiment with the creation of updated devotional mosaics of faith. Utilizing paper tiles of Medieval and Renaissance works from the public domain\, her process has been self-taught. A growing number of secular art mosaics from the same periods has expanded her saturated art line. She finds “the physical action of hand-piecing these works to be spiritually centering and meditative.” This passion was sparked during an Art History of the Middle Ages course taken as a returning college student and was further inflamed while touring museums and cathedrals in Prague and Vienna. \n“As a kindergartener\, I crayoned all over my paper in different colors\, covered it all with solid black\, and then scraped it away to reveal multi-colored designs. As a teenager\, I obsessed about the collage posters on my wall being placed exactly level. As a returning adult college student\, I fell in love with Medieval Christian art when I took my first (and only) Art History course. The Holy Image collaborations were first and then came the Secular line. I love how the group massed together seems to highlight the individual artwork. I hope others will feel as I do and enjoy these art mosaics with a depth of appreciation for each individual work of art as well as for the impact of the whole.” – Annie Ehrenreich \nMore about the artist here.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: “Sacred Space - Visual Voice” – New Works by Annie Ehrenreich
DESCRIPTION:Justus Sundermann Gallery\nNovember 1 through December 16\nAnnie Ehrenreich found herself fascinated by colorful Christian Medieval artwork\, causing her to experiment with the creation of updated devotional mosaics of faith.
