Cathedral Arts Book Review
November 12, 2019 at 10:30 AM
| FreeSince the 1930’s, when Ermance Rejebian began telling stories about books at Munger Place Methodist, Dallas has maintained an unusual tradition of small book review clubs. On Tuesday, November 12 at 10:30 am, Cathedral Arts is honored to present Susan Boone from the Dallas Professional Book Reviewers Association, in a lively discussion of The Other Alcott, a novel by Elise Hooper.
Stylish, outgoing, creative May Alcott grows up longing to experience the wide world beyond Concord, Massachusetts. While her sister Louisa crafts stories, May is a talented and dedicated artist, one who takes art lessons in Boston, turns down a marriage proposal from a well-off suitor, and faces scorn for entering what is very much a man’s profession. Life for the Alcott family has never been easy. When
Louisa’s novel, Little Women, is published its success eases the financial burdens the family has been facing for so many years. Everyone agrees the novel is charming, but May is struck to the core by her
sister’s portrayal of her as the selfish, spoiled Amy March and left wondering if this is what her sister thinks of her. May embarks on a quest to discover her identity, as an artist and a woman. From Boston to Rome, London, and Paris, this brave and determined soul forges an amazing life of her own, making her so much more than merely “The Other Alcott”.
These second Tuesday meetings in the Justus Sundermann Gallery include a 10:30 coffee, 10:45 presentation and an optional Club Members luncheon at 11:35 ($20.00 for non-members). Please contact Andrea Foster at 214.341.3432 by Thursday, November 7 to make a lunch reservation.
