Historic St. Matthew’s Cathedral has become a center for arts, discovery, and community in Old East Dallas. Adults and children from surrounding neighborhoods and beyond experience multiple free performing and visual arts events, including world-class recitals and concerts, inspiring Choral Evensong services, Justus Sundermann Gallery exhibitions, artist receptions and guest lectures.

Concerts.

To listen seriously to music and to perform it are among our most potent ways of learning what it is to live with and before God.
—Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury
Extraordinary musical events were in store for Cathedral Arts patrons early in 2022! The spectacular pianist Dongni Xie presented her long-awaited recital to the Great Hall. A special concert series, Black Voices, brought several distinguished Black performers to Cathedral Arts in the Spring, including pianist Gregory Thompson, world-renowned bass-baritone Donnie Ray Albert, and a group of fine young vocalists from South Africa, along with the music of some of America’s foremost Black composers.

Exhibitions.

The Justus Sundermann Gallery has become an important new venue for established and emerging visual artists in the Dallas area. The 2021-22 season launched a series of moving exhibits by several prominent Dallas artists. Ichilian: Father and Son was the intriguing title of Adele Ichilian’s collection of artworks created by her father and grandfather. Visual artists LaShonda Cooks and her father Gary Cooks debuted in the Sundermann Gallery with Sanctuary, exploring the sacred space that art creates for a father and daughter in seasons of change. In March 2022, the Second Annual Invitational Art Exhibition brought fourteen Dallas-area artists together for a major exhibit of painting, photography and sculpture. Previous Sundermann Gallery exhibitors also generously contributed numerous artworks to the annual Cathedral Arts Gala Benefit and Silent Auction in May, for a wonderful evening of art and fundraising.

Cathedral Arts depends upon your support as we continue to grow and plan for the future. The goal for the 2024 Pillars Campaign is $30,000 – only 300 gifts of $100 each. Your gift of one or more Pillars at $100 each enables Cathedral Arts to offer a season of outstanding free public arts programming at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral.

All gifts are greatly appreciated and fully tax-deductible! Purchase securely online here.
