Historic St. Matthew’s Cathedral has become a center for arts, discovery, inspiration and community in Old East Dallas. Adults and children from surrounding neighborhoods and beyond experience superb free performing and visual arts events, including world-class recitals and concerts, Justus Sundermann Gallery exhibitions, special events, artist receptions and guest lectures.
Concerts.
To listen seriously to music and to perform it are among our most potent ways of learning what it is to live with and before God.
—Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury
Extraordinary musical events were in store for Cathedral Arts patrons early in 2024! The spectacular pianist Dan Tepfer presented his long-awaited recital in the Cathedral nave. An ongoing concert series, Black Voices, has brought several distinguished Black performers to Cathedral Arts, including pianist Gregory Thompson, world-renowned bass-baritone Donnie Ray Albert, and a group of fine young vocalists from South Africa, along with the music of some of America’s foremost Black composers.
Exhibitions.
The Justus Sundermann Gallery has become an important venue for established and emerging visual artists in the Dallas area. 2024 launched a series of moving exhibits by prominent Dallas artists. Places of Prayer was the intriguing title of curator Carolyn Brown’s collection of large and small scale photographs of Dallas-area worship spaces, produced by outstanding local photographers. Portions of the collection traveled on loan to area churches, and exhibited in the downtown Architecture and Design Exchange Gallery. Fall 2024 brought a long-awaited Third Invitational Multi-Media Exhibition to the Justus Sundermann Gallery, curated by Visual Arts Director Evelyn Luciani. Paintings, sculptures and photographs by 22 distinguished Dallas-area artists opened with a festive reception on September 8, to an audience of over 200 visitors, including new residents from the neighboring Cathedral Arts apartments.
Cathedral Arts depends upon your support as we continue to grow and plan for the future. The goal for the 2025 Pillars Campaign is $30,000 – only 300 gifts of $100 each. Your gift of one or more Pillars at $100 each enables Cathedral Arts to offer a season of outstanding free public arts programming at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral.
All gifts are greatly appreciated and fully tax-deductible! Purchase securely online here.
