ST. MATTHEW’S CATHEDRAL ARTS

Founded in 2011, St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts is a financially-independent non-profit center for arts, discovery and community at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral, centered in the diverse communities of Old East Dallas. We are one mile from the nation’s largest Arts District, located in an area of rapidly changing demographics. With close proximity to Downtown Dallas, the Swiss Avenue Historic District, Lower Greenville, Uptown Dallas and the Park Cities, Cathedral Arts is housed in a beautiful historic building with ample free parking.

THREE VITAL IDEAS

A PROFOUNDLY DIVERSE COMMUNITY
A PROFOUNDLY DIVERSE COMMUNITYWith an understanding of the role of great art and artists in a great city
St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts is a broad-based community of members and friends of St. Matthew’s Cathedral who give time, talent, and treasure to support the performing and visual arts at the Cathedral, raising awareness of the Cathedral’s commitment to the arts and strengthening the Cathedral’s identity within the liturgical and cultural life of our area.
A SELF-SUSTAINING NONPROFIT
A SELF-SUSTAINING NONPROFITDedicated to bringing professional artists to the entire community, at no charge
St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts receives no funding from the Cathedral parish or the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas. An integral part of the SMCA philosophy is to share the arts with the entire community, regardless of one’s ability to pay. Our present financial support comes principally from patrons and supporters who are members and friends of the Cathedral. Our goal is to generate new audiences, which in turn will provide financial support and benefits to sustain SMCA into the future.

TESTIMONIALS

“Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed the Women’s Voices II concert on YouTube – really compelling music, and wonderful performances all around. Although of course the pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the performing arts, it really is a silver lining to see these creative and meaningful digital performances. Congratulations on this impressive artistic accomplishment.”
William Gibbons, Ph.D., Texas Christian University | College of Fine Arts | School of Music (November 2020)

“St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts has created a physical space where creative thinking can be translated into action! That action includes providing a beautifully flexible space where visual artists can exhibit their work and where music of many types is rehearsed, recorded, and performed. The benefits of having a place – a place to perform and exhibit – cannot be overestimated.”
Mary Dibbern, pianist and vocal coach (July 2020)

“It was wonderful to come back as co-host of the St. Matthews Cathedral Arts Annual Gala . . . Michie Akin helps shepherd us all along and does it with finesse. He does it with a great collection of people who love the arts, love music, and love people.”
Carl Youngberg, arts journalist and author (October 2019)

“My particular opportunity to witness the artistic vision of St. Matthew’s Cathedral Arts came in 2015, in the course of making recordings in the Cathedral with the excellent Jared Schwartz. Everything about the experience was memorable and positive – indeed unforgettable – and it was touching to see how SMCA contributes to and ploughs into the community, with the dedication from many people that goes into making it happen. The beauty of the Cathedral itself lent to the experience and felt part of making us able to give of our musical best, as did the goodwill with which we were welcomed.”
Roy Howat, concert pianist, author and editor, Royal Academy of Music, London (July 2020)

“This vital artistic home is worth all our support and love.”
Jared Schwartz, bass (July 2020)

“Jonathan Tsay provided an evening that was both educational and entertaining. I hope you have him back again. ”
Nelson Spencer, patron (Jonathan Tsay piano recital, May 2017)

“It was a great evening and a great occasion for SMCA!”
Roger Carroll, patron (Fei-Fei Dong piano recital, February 2018)

“Thanks for the wonderfully entertaining evening last weekend at St. Matthew’s. What a range that young man has! I also enjoyed the musicians’ talents and hope to hear more of them.”
Lynne Richardson, patron (Cathedral Jazz Night with Damon Clark Trio, June 2019)

“The Cathedral Arts Gala is an event I hope never to miss. It’s a great evening of wonderful entertainment, delicious food and an exciting auction.”
Ron Hackemack, patron (October 2017)
